BlackBerry Bold 9930 Review
It ships with BlackBerry 7, which is the newest version of RIM’s mobile operating system. The BlackBerry Bold 9930 brings RIM’s well known full QWERTY form factor and adds in a touchscreen to mix the best of both worlds. It is a whole new experience thanks to a fast 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a much-improved web browser.
The CPU is plenty powerful and ensures everything runs smoothly, especially when running apps or games that do not rely on an internet connection. Combined with stereo Bluetooth 2.1, and Wi-Fi support (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n [2.4 GHz]; and dual-band 802.11 a/n [5GHz]), that’s an impressive array of radios. Beyond being very aesthetically pleasing with a slick brushed-steel trim, it is the thinnest BlackBerry to date, measuring only 0.41 inches thick.
It offers a 2.8-inch LCD that may not be much bigger than that found in previous Bold models but is at least higher resolution: 640 x 480. The screen is one of the crispest and cleanest I’ve seen on a mobile device, with solid, deep blacks, and rich, warm colors.
Hands down, the BlackBerry Bold 9930 has the best keyboard ever to grace any of RIM’s products! Typing on it is a breeze and it just feels amazing. Key depressions give off a nice click to let you know they’re registering, and the keys are big enough to be hit easily and small enough so as not to result in a gigantic keyboard. The Send, Menu, Back and End keys are plain white this time around and blend perfectly with the face of the device.
The phone also sports a 5-megapixel camera and LED flash on its back which is capable of 720p HD video capture. The device is able to capture clear and crisp images quickly with virtually no catch-up. As poor as the still camera was, the 720p HD video camera was pretty impressive. The video quality was quite good, though audio was choppy at times.
The 9900 is truly an engineering breakthrough for RIM with software that makes it shine. If you’re a BlackBerry person, you’ll love the BlackBerry Bold 9930. It is indeed the best BlackBerry yet.
